Joseph Jacks on Twitter claims that neural net engineers are now getting paid $5-$20MM per year.
How can this be possible?
It is clear by now that generative AI is going to have far reaching effects. The companies that are building the models have obscene amounts of funding and are in a race with each other to “win” the new tech paradigm. And there are just not that many NN engineers out there. Very high demand, and very low supply, combined with very high perceived value creation means that salaries can be bid up to unbelievable levels.
If you are not a neural net engineer already it is unlikely that you should quit your job and try and become one (but maybe you should?). But the general principle is that human beings who can COMPLIMENT AI are going to have increased compensation in the future. AI will make many roles (and skills) obsolete, but it will also make some skills more valuable than ever - mostly rare skills that involve making the AI itself more efficient.
The more you are familiar with AI capabilities the more you should be able to ride this wave to better career opportunities than ever before.
(And it doesn’t mean you have to work four jobs at the same time).
Keep it simple,
Edward
p.s., When I was writing the sentence about the “new tech paradigm”, I could not remember the word “paradigm”. I knew what I wanted to say, and I knew it started with a “p”, but I completely blanked on the word. Google was no help. Neither was a thesaurus. But I asked ChatGPT what word I was thinking of that started with a p, and it gave me the answer immidiately
