According to the WSJ, “The new “Harry Potter” videogame “Hogwarts Legacy” is selling well despite controversy”. Really well. In the first two weeks the game has outgrossed all of the Fantastic Beast films, and is working its way past the original movie series ($850MM in the first two weeks vs $975MM for Sorcerer’s Stone lifetime).
Another example of how customers really don’t care about your company’s beliefs — even when it is as closely tied to the product as Rowling is with the Potterverse.
I loved this quote from a 26-year old who disagrees with Rowling about transgender issues: “If we stopped supporting every artist, every company or business because we did not like the opinion of the owners or who runs the company, we would quite literally have to make our own clothes, grow our own food.”
It’s a reminder that people who are upset about your company’s behavior (or potential behavior) are upset about ALL of the companies’ behaviors. They can’t refuse to purchase EVERYTHING (and if they do, then they likely aren’t a great customer for you anyway).
Keep it simple,
