Last October, I stumbled upon a new piece of writing to add to my quake list: Brian Lui’s essay on a concept he calls “upside decay.” Lui’s piece did not fundamentally change the way I see the world, so much as it provided a helpful vocabulary and mental structure for an idea I have long believed — the risk of “optimizing for the middle instead of the tails.”
